A critical juncture reached in the federal investigation of Hunter Biden

Investigators are weighing possible charges they may place on the President's crack-smoking son.

Charges could include:

• Tax violations

• making false statements (in connection to the gun he purchased, and later threw out in a dumpster)

Claims against Biden's son have come often since he announced his intention to run for president of the united states in 2020. His dealings with Barisma, a foreign-owned energy company have raised speculation. The leaked text conversations between Hunter and his father Joe also raise questions over their foreign affairs. Not to mention the fact that the President shares a bank account with his son.

Prosecutors are wrestling current;y with a precedent that has been set for years. That is: avoiding politically sensitive cases within 60 days of an election. Some argue this is the case when it comes to midterms. Their opposition argues that Biden is not on the ballot in the midterms, and attempting to prosecute Hunter Biden would be fair.

Hunter has publicly discussed his substance abuse. Some officials .claimed Hunter may be able to use the argument he was not aware of any wrongdoing because he was on drugs. While others argue his timeline of recovery shows how he should be held fully responsible for the decisions he made.

Attorney General Merrick Garland released a May memo reiterating their stance on prosecuting politically sensitive cases during an election year. Garland was imposed to his position by former Vice President Joe Biden and had been a candidate for the supreme court under former president, Obama.

The U.S. attorney's office in manhattan has not necessarily followed this president in the past, however. in 2018 they charged two politically sensitive cases in august: Micheal Cohen (Trump's, former personal attorney) and Chris Collins who was a former Republican congressman.

Cohen pleaded guilty to campaign finance, tax, and other charges. He served a three-year prison sentence. Collins was sentenced to 26 months in prison but only served 2 after being pardoned by Donald Trump.
