Reparations task force to meet in California for the first time since its creation

In 2020, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced a plan to create a new task force whose prime focus was to study slavery and its effects on society during the 21st century, especially in education, housing, and banking.

The group voted last month 5-4 to limit reparations to only those who are descendants of enslaved black people. Some have claimed that lineage-based reparations "unfairly shuts out Black people who have also suffered systemic discrimination." That point is mute when the reasoning behind the reparations task force.

A plan for reparations is due to the California legislature in 2023. California is the only state to move in this direction so far. Could we see others choose this path soon?
